Plumbing estimating software for a small shop has one job before any other: turn the takeoff into a price the customer can sign and the company can make money at. That means the fixture count and the pipe runs priced from a rate table the shop trusts, the labor hours at a loaded rate that includes the truck and the benefits, the overhead share, the markup, and a record of whether the number won. The scheduling, the dispatch and the accounting are other products' jobs; the estimating software's job is that every quote leaves the office priced on the same method. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, cited on this site, puts the median annual wage for cost estimators at $78,740 in May 2025, which is what a shop pays a person to do this work full time, and the free template on this site prices a job by the same method for nothing.

Keep the rate table, not just the price list

A plumbing estimate is fixtures, runs and hours, and the numbers that matter are the loaded labor rate and the markup rather than the catalogue price of a valve. Software that holds the rate table per trade and per crew, and updates every estimate when a rate changes, is the difference between a quote and a guess; the template on this site takes the rate and the markup as inputs so the shop sees what each does to the total.

Price every job on one method

Material with waste, labor at the loaded rate, subs and equipment, overhead at the company's share, profit at the markup: the same lines on every estimate, so two estimators price the same job the same way and the customer sees the same shape twice. Pro holds the method and prints the lines; the free template prints them for one job at a time.

Record the win or the loss against the markup

An estimate that went out and was never reconciled tells the shop nothing about its pricing. The win recorded against the markup, and the loss with the reason, are what let the estimator choose next month's markup on evidence rather than habit. Pro keeps that record per customer and per job and exports it for the accountant.

Markupbird Pro

Keeping what you make

The answers and the template are free forever. Pro turns them into your estimating record: every estimate kept against the customer and the job, the takeoff and the markup behind each line, the win and the loss recorded so next month's markup is chosen on evidence, reminders to the person who owes a quote, and a clean export when the accountant asks what the jobs cost against what they were priced at.

Plumbing estimating software: common questions

Is there free plumbing estimating software? The template on this site prices a job from your own takeoff, rate, overhead and markup, free and with no account, and you can print the estimate. Markupbird Pro adds the record: the rate tables, the estimates kept against customers and jobs, the wins and losses against the markup, and the export.

What markup should a plumbing company use? Whatever covers the overhead share and leaves the profit the owner needs, which is a number for the company's own books rather than a rule of thumb; the template on this site prints the margin the total carries at any markup you try, so the figure is chosen with the margin in front of it.

Does a one-truck plumber need estimating software? The free template carries a one-truck shop for a long time. Pro is worth it the first time two quotes for the same kind of job go out at different prices, or the first time nobody can say which markup has been winning.
